Burnham Plastering and Drylining Ltd have partnered with Bridgwater College to recruit new apprenticeships that wish to work in the construction industry. This comes at a time when demand in the South West for new plasterers and dry liners stands at 4,000 by 2018, as thousands of new homes and industrial developments get underway.

What qualification you will be working towards?

You will work towards gaining an NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship in either Interior Systems or Painting and Decorating. The course is split into units and you will need 5 units to complete the NVQ. Key Functional Skills in Mathematics and English will be taught depending on your relevant grades, and the subjects covered will include:

Both Apprenticeships:

  • Health and Safety
  • Moving and Handing Resources
  • Efficient work practices
  • Using Maths and English in the Workplace

Interior Systems (Drylining) Apprenticeship:

  • Installing Partition Systems
  • Installing Drylining Joints
  • Installing Drylining joints, encasements and partition systems
  • Installing suspended ceiling systems

Painting & Decorating Apprenticeship

  • Undercoat & gloss to woodwork
  • Making good after snagging

Your time at college

Lessons are completed at Bridgwater College’s training centre, and the day normally begins at 9.00am and ends at 4.30pm. You will normally spend four days a week on site (five days during the weeks when college is not running), and Friday is a college day.

Apprentice working hours

A normal working day will require you to be picked up around 7.00am for a 7.30am start onsite. The length of the working day depends on seasonal workloads and varies accordingly. This is not a ‘nine to five’ job, so a flexible attitude is essential.

On completion of the Apprenticeship, what next?

On completion of the apprenticeship, each apprentice will be reviewed, and changes to contracts will be made accordingly.

Is all of the required clothing and tools provided?

All special clothing required is provided free of charge to apprentices, and tools will be agreed with us prior to commencing work.
